I played guitar for almost a year now and i never had a class. i learned simple songs on acoustic so i can get the hang of chords and bar chords and stuff. learning by tabs is the best. i cant read sheet music. i learned songs with solos and i usually go on youtube for a "how to play ___________ by _______ " and ultimate guitar has tabs but if you search tabs for songs on google you'll find good tabs for it.

I taught myself and I memorized a few chords on Ultimate-Guitar.com and began playing like that. It's worked out pretty well so far :)
