Where to begin when attempting to learn the guitar?

Question: Where to begin when attempting to learn the guitar?

(Posted by: hiellio on 2009-10-20 19:19:37)

Recently, I have been able to incorporate more time in my day to work on hobbies and forms of relaxation and such. My Dad gave me a mini squire in third grade, I'm now in 12th grade and haven't touched it in at least nine years. I have no musical knowledge, I even forgot the little that I once possessed. Does anyone have any tips as to where I should start to begin? Unfortunately, I can't afford lessons :(

Learn simple chords like C and D and G and Em. You can find these online easily. Them to songs by finding the chords to songs you like online. Just practice like so until you can play Freebird, because thats all you really need to know to play a concert.

You can get inexpensive books at music stores that show how to make chords on a guitar. Start by learning the major chords. Practice changing chords quickly, like from C chord to G chord. Listen to your chord changes, and you should soon be able to recognize chord changes in music you listen to. Then start trying to pick out melodies. You can get books that show you how to read music for guitars. If you don't have a lot of ambition, you probably won't get far without lessons.

Learn your basic chords like g,c,d,e,a. with that you can play plenty of stuff. after that you can learn scales or just read tabs.

My recomendation is to ask for free lessons to some music teacher who plays the guitar (its more easy for them to say sure) you could also try online lessons or google them.

Thre are plenty of free instruction sites on line. if u want to learn really quickly, learn to read tabs. any site would have a tutorial at the start. listen to songs with a lot of guitar and look them up on a guitar tab site. have fun :)

I have a book the teaches you the notes on the strings. With that book I learned how to play guitar without lessons! Now I'm pretty good! You could probably look up how to play notes online and then find some easy songs and work your way up from there! Good luck!!! -Maple

I taught myself four years ago and am pretty good if I saw so myself. What I did was just find a simple song I like, and Google the 'chords' to that song and just practice. Start with the simple chords such as G, A, E, C, and D. Just practice placing your fingers in the patterns for each chord and transitioning to another chord. Over time your fingers will memorize where to go and you can go from one chord to another like it's nothing.

Check out YouTube and buy a couple of beginners books. That's where I started, unfortunately my hands are too small. But there are plenty of channels on YouTube, the best part about those is that the people who create the videos can also offer helpful tips and you can pause the video and work at your leisure. Definitely buy a few books so that you can at least know how to read chords. If you could find one that comes with a CD to help, that would be awesome. That way you can also tune your guitar before practicing because the first track always plays the notes the strings need to be tuned to. And if you know people who play guitar, ask them to give you a few tips and maybe they can help you. Once you learn the basic chords you can pretty much teach yourself. Good luck!

This is how I started learning. I paid for lessons, but you can now find many lessons online. Learn and Master -c major scale -blues scale -c minor scale You can try looking this up on youtube or looking for TABs Look up chord charts online and learn basic ones. G, E major, A minor, F etc. Just look for charts that look easy. Practice moving back and forth between chords. once you've learned your basic skills check out this site and try learning Hurt by Johnny Cash. Its really simple, the lesson is fantastic, it was the first song I ever learned. guitarnoise.com/ Hope this helps ;)

This website has free video based guitar lessons for absolute beginners and assume you know nothing or close to nothing. There's lessons on the basic guitar chords, scales, techniques and some easy songs to play.
