Lessons by far, but I'm self taught and I turned out ok

I took lessons when i first started. learn your strings and notes then go on youtube and learn your favorite songs.

Good question and the best way IMO is to learn with a teacher face to face... that way he/ she can correct your rhythm, hand placement and other difficulties you face. Honestly its the fastest way to learn how to do it. However, its not the only way... some people do equally well with self-learning through books or CDs... maybe because they don't have time or money to keep paying/ going for lessons. In that case, picking a good guitar program will help. The one listed below is probably one of the best I've tried and would highly recommend it for beginners.

If you don't have time for personal guitar tutors, I suggest you search the web for video guitar lessons. In my opinion, learning from books isn't really a good choice, since you can't hear what you should be playing, which is a fundamental aspect of learning music.
