Question: How long does it take the average person to learn the guitar?
(Posted by: What's New? on 2009-04-28 15:23:32)
I'm really interested in playing it, and I'm just curious of how long it usually takes for someone to master playing the guitar. Or if you know how to play the guitar, how long did it take you? Thankyou so much in advance. (: Sorry if I didn't make it clear about the "master " thing haha but I mean just learning the chords and such. |

I guess you never really stop learning new things on the guitar.. Great instrument though and a lot of fun to play. My dad has been playing for a long, long time, and he's played with a lot of bands and musicians and I'm pretty sure he still learns new stuff. I guess to be good at guitar it depends on the person, some people can pick it up quickly and others it takes more time. It does take a lot of practice though. I've been around music and guitars all my life (as I mentioned before, my dad's a pro) and I only started taking it at school this year - I have guitar class everyday and I still spend a lot of time practicing, but it's definitely a lot of fun. If I were you, I'd go ahead and take it up :) |

I could have you playing pearl jam in five minutes, but ive been playing over 5 years and I still dont know the point at which I 'learned' or 'will learn' the guitar. learning is a progressive thing, and there is always something new to learn, especially with guitar. Right now I am working on my pinch harmonics and using my pinky more. Noone will ever be fully 'learned' not even stevie vai |

It doesn't take long to pick up the basic skills needed to play chords etc but if you want to 'master' it, that will take years of dedicated practice and lessons. Even those who are very skilled cant really claim to be complete 'masters'. Once you can play decently from lessons, you should make a band if possible as its a great incentive to keep practicing and be creative. |

Well it depends on how far you want to go. Here is a list of different styles: Rock: 1 month Metal: 2-3 months Lead/ Solo: 1-2 months Special effects: 4-5 months That is how long it took me. I teach myself so if you take lessons it will probably be half the time. |

Basic chords and barre chords you can learn by practicing everyday for days or weeks. Learning shred guitar, or any type of speed playing takes months and years of constant practice. |
