Well, I learn solos by ear. Most of the time I am pretty accurate. But I naturally have a good sense of pitch and I know my music theory. I know the fundamentals. I know my scales. I have been playing guitar for a long time. But I must admit that I also hate tab. A lot of times, the tab on the internet and in many music books isn't even accurate because if you watch a band play the song live and then go home and pick up a guitar and read the tab in some book, there is a good chance that the way the guitarist played it onstage is different from the tab. In other words, it can sometimes be hard to get extremely accurate tab. So the best thing a guitarist can do to compensate for that is to develop a good ear. If you don't naturally have a good ear for music it can take time. But you can develop it. Don't be afraid to experiment on the guitar if you are trying to play the solo from a song. Sometimes it takes a little time but if you really sit down and try to work it out, it can be done. Also, you do have the right idea by watching instructional videos on youtube. Sometimes it helps to actually watch someone play it. That is what helps me the most. I sometimes need a visual guide. |
