I have no string instrument skills whatsoever. i'm more of a keyboard person but i want to have more knowledge of other instruments and i wanted to start with acoustic guitar. how hard is it to learn to play it and how long does it generally take to get the hang of it?

Well it all depends on how much you are willing to learn. Starting on an acoustic to me is better because it built my callouses faster so when i went to the electric gutiar it didn't hurt as much. Now I can't read music but tabs are easier anyway...it basically just say for you to go to the string and put your finger here and pick.... check out this website and look at the tabs for a song. ultimate-guitar.com search your songs in tabs. Oh and I forgot if you are impatient don't do it.

I was a keyboard person too :) played the piano for 5 years but wanted to take on a new challenge. That was 8 years ago and now I teach guitar! My lessons are on YouTube and absolutely free. I do a new one every week, I just uploaded a new one today actually. youtube.com/ user/ UKGuitarGirl - check it out! It isn't hard to learn to play as long as you have the right resources. My lessons show you how to play a Kings Of Leon song in 3 weeks. It's even easier if you played piano first, since you'll have good hand-eye coordination and coordination between your hands. It's a good thing you're planning on starting acoustic too - it'll benefit you in the long run. Let me know if you have any questions!

Koala, Guitar is easy to learn. Its fretted which makes it way easier than say a violin. It is so ubiquitous in rock, that you will love it. It will take a bit of time for some muscle articulation, but you might already have much of it from your keyboard skills. It will take some weeks or months to play some songs if you do things right. You can take some traditional way but I don't recommend it. Get started having fun on the guitar now by using my method of playing and having fun from day 1: 1. First make a short list of your favorite pop/ rock (or any genre) songs. Maybe 10. 2. Look up chords for these on the web. 3. Pick out the one with the fewest number of chords 4. Look up those chords and learn how to finger them 5. Play that song every day for a week or two, and you'll KNOW those chords by heart. 6. Rinse and Repeat That will keep you going for quite a while and having fun quickly. There is much more information about learning guitar at a website know of, and I will include the link below in case you really want to crank up your skills. Good Luck rocking and having fun doing it, John
