Question: Tips for learning rock guitar?
(Posted by: Annie O on 2008-12-02 20:07:18)
I have been playing for about a year- but not dedicatedly and not everyday- so i'm more at a beginner/ intermediate level. If i had a teacher, what would they be making me practice at this point? What skills do i need for my playing to be more fluent? and how the hell is speed guitar possible- geeeeeze i was watching some of those ppl on youtube and it just about blew my mind! |

Practice your scales... once you get fast at them, youll train your fingers to move the right way. Ultimate-guitar.com go here to learn songs too |

Read tabs and practice songs. And practice more songs. And more. And beat up people who play Guitar Hero. |

Persevearance and practice are THE most important things to do. Play some easier you songs you know and like, and then once you're better, you can start on more advanced songs you like and know! Practice every day, at least 30 min- an hour, or whenever is most convenient! |

Well i dont play guitar but piano and if you had a teacher they would make you practice infact i havent practiced in like a month (i dont have a teacher im in college so i dont have to practice now) and i probably should be so i dont lose skills its been said but practice is the only way i get TONS better when i practiced- my teacher actually noticed you get faster when you have confidence and then things just get easier- this confidence comes from- again practice the way i get good at a song is i start with an easy song, and when i hear myself play it well it encourages me to do it more, and soon i can play it well after i run through it several times then i tackle the more difficult ones first sorting out what the right notes are, and then i try to get timing right |

Hey! I think that's great. I also think you may need more practice. there are online teachers, but they may charge you some extra money. I play music but I am not interested in rock guitar. But I believe that you should go down to your music store and ask for a book with all the chords in it. then find (2-3)some songs that you are interested in playing and learn to play them. I wish you good luck and happy playing. |

If you are just at the "beginner/ intermediate " level, then forget about the whole speed BS. A teacher would tell you to slow your song down to a point that the song almost seems like it's dragging. Play your song at a "dragging " speed, and when you get to the point of playing it without even thinking about it, then speed it up just a bit and then repeat those steps again. It's not going to happen over night, but in do time, you will get faster and better. |

If you had a teacher they would teach you how to play chords, how to tune your guitar, simple stuff. if you want to get better at ur skills then u should learn your Guitar scales in order to play good smooth solo's to a song. chordbook.com/ guitarscales.php ( guitar scales ) and what u saw on the video is called shredding or guitar swifts...first learn your guitar scales..then in time increase your finger speed and your picking speed..and soon you'll be doing shredding. |

My son took lessens for about five years before he outgrew the instructor's teaching. At one point the weekly instructions simply became jam sessions between them. Now he plays as well or better than most on youtube. If you can't get lessens, buy tab books (or sheet music if you can read notes) and practice, practice, practice. The biggest problem my son had was tempo. Even if you want to go fast, sometimes it just doesn't sound like the song is supposed to be played. Good luck and keep practicing--especially chords! |

Learn, and get good at power cords. there in almost every rock song, also learn how to do improvising on a blues scale, thats what solos are made from. and make sure you can read tab. oh and you should try to get good with the distortion, and try some drop tuning. |

Wtf? All these people sayin rock band and guitar hero. They aint even close to the same as a REAL guitar. Play tabs of your favorite songs to keep yourself havin fun, and to build your speed up play your scales repetitively and practice hammer-on's and pull-off's |
