Its good you are learning any guitar. Its first important to learn your chords, you will still need them when you rock. Learn your basic open chord patterns, then learn your bar chord forms. Then learn your scales starting with the major scale, pentatonic scale, blues scale, harmonic minor and diminished. learn them in the modes of boxed off sections of 5 fret distances to latter be able to join the boxes to see its complete form over the entire neck. practise mechanically every day. after the scales you will see how chord forms fit into these scales visually. and help you stay in key when jamming with others. after all this learn two note leads of thirds and their inversions sixths. all except pentatonic, blues and diminished use them. these use a combination of thirds and fourths. this opens up another area of your music of harmony. if you play any of the basic triads(chords based on the first, third and fifth) and you add thirds or sixths out of that scale on any note of that scale. with exception of the pentatonic, blues and diminished which has the consequetive thirds fourth ect. you will have more complex added chord forms than the basic triads-major, minor ,diminished and augumented. which will create movement and a modern feel to your music. heres two theories i apply which i have discovered.( to any basic chord you can add any third or sixth out of that scale. - or thirds and/ or fourths for the others). (to any bass note you can add any seventh chord as long as you use any three notes of the four notes that make up that seventh chord. this is where iam today and i rock! learn these things in this order till you understand everything iam stating here.- oh and you might want to include finger picking which makes playing on your own exciting. and with practising on your own with scales record strumming of the different chords in that scale. so you learn to identify how the scales fit with these chords. happy jamming! |

You'll want both. I would switch. Get a Line 6 Spider III amp, and Ibanez guitar. Good stuff. -D |

If you want to change, change. Learn whatever makes you happy. Although if you do change, don't totally give up on the acoustic, because that can be useful in improving your technique. |

Never play just electric and not acoustic. Acoustic is harder and will keep your fingers in better shape. Besides, you can't do an unplugged album if you don't play acoustic. |

I play both but if you want to play a different style just look up different tabs to songs with more of a 'in your face' kind of attitude. If you've only been playing for 4 months then you should probably play a little longer depending on how fast you learn. In my opinion, the acoustic is amazing and chicks dig it. |

Get an electric and some effects, then have fun improvising and hopefully you'll come up with a unique and original sound! Oh and have lots of fun on the way! |

Well, you can learn rock songs on acoustic as well. I guess it depends on what u are learning on the acoustic but check out an old 90's band called "Days of the New. " Awesome acoustic rock. Pick up an electric too if you want some variety but the skills that you learn on the acoustic will make playing the electric that much easier. |

My brother wanted to learn to play electric guitar, but my parents persuaded him to start by learning electric... when he then got an electric guitar and tried to learn electric, he found out that it would have made sense to just learn electric. It depends whether you want to be able to play acoustic as well. |

Most people are pf the opinion that you should learn both and I would agree. Electric guitars are a lot more unforgiving and make a learner sound worse than an acoustic will do. Another important point is that you will find your parents (assuming you are at home) will be a lot happier to hear you practise on an acoustic. When and if you decide to buy an electric don't just jump in and buy whatever your favourite artist plays. Go to a good guitar shop and decide which you like the look of, then ask to try them out. Most good shops will let you play a bit, when you find one you like the feel and action of (and believe me they are all different) then buy it. A decent electric is an expensive investment and you don't want to find six months down the line that you have made a mistake. As for your intention of learning rock guitar can't fault you but work a bit of blues in there too. Gary Moore etc. Rock on and enjoy. |

Broaden your outlook and learn as many different styles as you can. Remember that a song is just a song and can be played in any style. |
