I wouldn't have thought so, its a natural talent and you would have to know your instument, chords and scales pretty well. I taught myself to play some 38yrs ago so have always learnt by ear. so the answer is experience i think |

Im a guitarist so it mostly takes time but check out guitar for dummies or listen to a song and go through every note in a pentatonic scale or major/ minor scale starting at the 5th fret working up or down the neck depending on the song |

I don't know how exactly you can learn a song by ear and get taught it from a book. But, generally it is a musical gift that very few have. If you are really interested in playing by ear, I would suggest that you memorize each sound that each string makes. Yes, it may take long.. But, if you really want to learn it that way thats the only way I can see it happening. |

Wow. People are just completely ridiculous. Don't answer if you don't know. Learning music by ear is not a natural gift. It's not something you are born with. And it's not something you can't learn. Yes some people can learn music by ear without any official training. But some people can shoot a basketball really well without being taught. You see what I'm saying? As long as your not tone deaf then you have the ability to learn how to play music by ear. You teach yourself. Go here and start training your ear to distinguish between different intervals. Then back it up with some music theory, and you'll be able to find the progressions very easily. musictheory.net/ trainers/ html/ id90_en.html |

All the above answers are wrong except for ovationlj! A "good ear " is something you can possibly be born with. I was, and I consider myself lucky. But, if you weren't born with a good ear it doesn't mean you can't have one. All you have to do is train your ear through what is called "Ear Training " (duh) and practice with your ear just like it were any other instrument. The first thing you should start is trying to identify intervals (intervals is a fancy way of saying: "the distance between two notes "). This site should start you off in the right direction, try the "Generic Intervals " lesson until you understand the concept. Then use the interval trainer and keep practicing until you can get 100% every time: musictheory.net/ lessons/ html/ id30_en.html |
