Learning guitar easier than bass?

Question: Learning guitar easier than bass?

(Posted by: Reutr E on 2010-01-21 19:57:57)

I'd like to learn guitar. The story is, I started with piano, but couldn't stand classical stuff. Moved to bass, but I love guitar solos, and would rather play them then play along with them. Now, I need to learn guitar (metal guitar). I'd like to know if it is easier than bass, in any way? I didn't use a pick when playing bass, but I fear I may struggle using a pick... but I hope to hear otherwise?

If you played piano, and you played bass, you get music and understand finger coordination somewhat. Bass is a great way to begin playing guitar. picking isn't to hard to pick up. Just practice practice practice.

You'll probably find it easier to press down the smaller strings, and your ability to play two other instruments will help your ear and your hand coordination Playing with a pick is always awkward at first. No two ways about it. Just go slow, practice daily, keep it fun. Guitar is a beautiful, wonderful instrument. It can be warm and seductive like nylon string classical and mainstream jazz, and it can be in-your-face-shred-metal intense. And everything in between.

No... Guitar is harder.. You have 2 more strings and that means that you have more theory, and if you have more theory then you have more options, and if you have more options then it means that it's harder to play

Well, having done all three for years, I can say that if you put TSNE and Soulmate's answers together, you pretty much have the right answer. I was in the almost exact same position as you: piano first, then guitar, then bass. Bass was incredibly easy as far as finding notes, expression, etc., but it was building up the muscles in my fingers to press the strings on the bass that took me a little bit. Switching from picking to fingering only took a little bit of practice, but it wasn't anything to worry about (I did finger picking on guitar as well). Now going from bass to lead guitar could prove to be a little more of an obstacle as far as speed and being able to run longer scales, but not much I'm sure. You sound talented and you know a bit about music, so I don't think it'll be hard for ya, just practice practice practice.

Ok don't listen to everyone who is being closed minded learning guitar and learning bass are 2 different things the people who say thatt bass is flat out easier are the people who have never even played a bass. guitar is not harder than bass and bass is not harder than guitar. it really just depends how you look at it. ok first ways bass can be harder, 1. has thicker strings which really makes fast playing hard 2. has way bigger frets which makes fast playing harder. 3. you usually play with your fingers which my friend at first may seem easier than a pick...but it is harder 4. and the strings are farther apart which makes fast playing harder. 5. If you already played piano before than you should know treble clef...but you might not know bass clef just yet, so this makes bass harder to learn ways guitar can be harder, 1. you play chords on guitar 2. there are more strings so more to learn 3. usually involves fast playing so more hand eye coordination. I play piano, bass, guitar, and saxophone...so I really don't think anyone instrument is harder than the other. but just to prove the people who say guitar is harder wrong. think of this...you have to play a crazy wicked metallica song on guitar, but you also have to play the exact same notes at the exact same speed on bass....this would make bass actually harder because it has to move just as fast as guitar but it is harder to move that fast so overall it just depends on what type of song you are playing...not the instrument itself....!!!!!!!!
