I want to learn how to play guitar but...?

Question: I want to learn how to play guitar but...?

(Posted by: coolboyplus on 2010-06-02 08:59:49)

I am 16 and impaired hearing, I really want to play guitar but my parents said that I can't because I am impaired hearing. I think I CAN, because I believe in "A deaf person can do anything, expect hearing ", I can't speak very well but I really want to play guitar... I know I wish I am hearing person but I accept what I am. So is there a way for me to teach myself how to play guitar? Thanks

Agree “A deaf person can do anything”. Strongly recommend finding a local teacher to start. Private lessons would be best – but even inexpensive community / group lessons would help. Get a large steel string guitar. You will feel the guitars vibrations with a larger guitar. Just three or four lessons should teach you how to tune a guitar with an inexpensive battery operated tuner and the basics of fingering chords and strumming. Next you will need basic books to teach yourself. If you attempt to sing – would probably improve your speaking ability. Try using that argument to persuade your parents! Good luck and have fun.

It might be a little hard to tune your guitar (since this is usually done by listening to it), but as for actually playing it, that should be doable. You can but charts to learn chords, and tablature (I don't know how to spell the whole word, since it's usually abbreviated as "tab " and I'm a terrible speller anyway) online to learn songs. As long as you can find a way to tune it, you can play guitar just like anyone else.

I agree. I took ASL in college. While I'm not sure you'd be able to play with other musicians you should be able to try it. If you had a flashing metronome you could likely do it. I "ve heard of hearing impaired people learning to dance and blind people learning to drive so there is no reason you can't learn guitar. Good luck. PS- Tuning wouldn't be an issue. You can easily get a tuner and use it to get your instrument in tune.
