(Posted by: fhockyou (: on 2010-02-14 18:39:24)
I really want to get a guitar for my 17th bday this year. i really want to start learning, cuz im good with beats and counting music, and also i want to have a little hobby, and i am starting to get interested in music. what kind of guitars do you suggest for beginners? is it hard learning? do you recommend a teacher or self taught? anything is helpful! |

The only useful advice I can give you is do it. If you want to play guitar, do it. Don't wait until you've got the right teacher or the right book or the right sound, just find something you want to play and play it. No matter how awful you sound in the beginning, keep playing. Eighty percent of all the people I've met that say they want to play guitar never do. They wait, they wait for things that don't come and things that aren't what they appeared to be from a distance. It doesn't much matter what kind of guitar you get or if you pay someone to teach you. As long as you have some kind of guitar and a song you want to play you should do it. |

1.) I recommend the squire guitar by fender, it was my first guitar and it was fabulous. 2.) not really, you just need a lot of patience 3.) I recommend getting a teacher for about a year, then using youtube videos to learn more songs. Also, you can see if there are any places near you that have jam sessions :) |

Okay ive played since i was 9 and here are some tips(: Start with something lie a fender or a cort guitar. There really simple and not over the top expensive. Guitar Pics- Jim Dunlop is what ive been using they come in many sizes! ive used them for years Guitar Strings- Elixer Strings are great(: Okay so now in the beginning the first 6 months or year it is complicating and frustrating. When you start you kinda have to get used to holding frets and strings down and you get blisters or something similar to calluses. Learning isnt hard after a while if you practice it. Alternative picking is big in guitar not until you get more into picking though. You usually start with scales and chords and notes and the basic stuff. YES it is very boring but you get it over with the first couple months. Yes you will want to quit after frustration DONT. yes it will take blood, sweat and tears. But guitar is an amazing instrument. Its hard it really is but if you can get through the beginning its a lot of fun after that! I hope you enjor this instrument <3 |

First off don't get a Fender Squier! Fender makes good higher-end guitars, but their Squier line is crap (I use my sister's old one as a source of spare parts). I started with a Yamaha that did really well to start out on (it was a starter pack that ran me around $200 I think). Your first guitar isn't going to be the greatest, but I liked the way the Yamaha played. After a couple years I upgraded to a Schecter C-1 Elite (Schecter's guitars ROCK) and a Line 6 amp. I taught myself, and it wasn't too hard for me. it just required time and perseverance. I also had 6 years of piano behind me though, so I understood chord structure and music theory before I started. after I got going on guitar though I dropped piano lessons (though I still play plenty) and focussed on expanding my guitar skills and now I've been playing (both solo and in bands) for over a decade. but some people find it easier to learn with a teacher, it all depends on what works best for you. I just picked a song out of my music collection and learned it (first one was Goo Goo Dolls' "Acoustic #3 "). Have fun with it! Edit: I agree with Ashley H on the picks. Dunlop makes really good ones. I use Dunlop Tortex 1.14 mm. For strings ALL I use for my electric guitars, my acoustic guitars, and my bass guitar is Ernie Ball. They sound great, they're not expensive, and come in so many different sets. |
