Yes, there are plenty of lessons available for the bass guitar and if you feel it is important to read music and perhaps work with a big band or in a studio, it might be good to take lessons and learn how to read music and understand music theory. I taught myself to play the guitar and I learned how to read chord symbols and later switched to bass because there seemed to be more jobs available for bass players. Bass is perhaps the easiest instrument to learn how to play. If you have an ear for music and enjoy listening to and picking out the bass part in a song, you can probably learn to play on your own or by watching FREE YouTube video lessons. youtube.com/ results?search_query= bass+ guitar+ lessons+ for+ beginners &aq= 1 &oq= bass+ guitar+ Even though I never learned how to read music and never took lessons, I'm a songwriter today and with the help of today's recording software, I find it quite easy to write music even thought if you put some strange sheet music in front of me it might take me all day to figure it out. If you play the recording for me, I can figure it out right away just by listening to it and trying a few notes until I get it right. So, in my case, I have never considered it a handicap that I don't read music. I have played with some great musicians who read music and many who could not and in my opinion, if your only intention is to play popular music and you can figure it out by ear, then you probably don't need to know how to read unless you want to learn it. |
