When I first started, I would just walk up the fretboard, going from fret to fret. Just find a good rhythm and base everything on that. In the beginning, stay on the top string, and when you get better, then you can start doing scales and more technical stuff. I'm not sure if what I'm telling you will help, but thats how I did it.

There is a great program that lets you listen to tabs and lets you see what frets the bass is playing.. It's called Guitar Pro . I believe they are on version 5, but you can download the free trial version from guitar-pro.com and you can get guitar pro tabs from 911tabs.com .. It helps a lot to hear the tab before you spend a lot of time learning something that isn't correct. It also helps to know some other people to play with and pick up some things.

If your teaching yourself, look up tabs of songs you know the bass to. (Another One Bites The Dust- by Queen has an easy to hear bass and it's probably not too hard for begginers. And if you dont already, learn how to read tab. It's soooo easy. P.S. Power tab is like Guitar Pro, but the full version is free! Look it up on google to download it. Then you can find songs for power tab and it will play it for you and you can try to play along once you got it.

May I suggest investing your first few weeks learning how to read tabs? Tabs are actually quite simple to read and understand; they tell you which string to play and on which fret. Very simple. Once you understand tabs you can look up most any song on the internet and learn it's bass riffs. However, I'd start off with bands with simple bass lines. Example Tab: G - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Bottom String D - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A - - - - - - - - 3 - 3 - 3 - 5 - 5 - 5 - 3 - 3 - 3 - - - - - E - 3 - 3 - 3 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Top String
