In the ASCII- like tabs you find on the internet and Ultimate- Guitar.com, what does it mean when the numbers that tell you what fret to hold are in paranthesis? Example; E - - 7- - - - - - - 7- - - - - - - - - - - A- - - - - - - 9- - - - - - - 9- - (9)- - - - - - - - - - - D- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

It depends. It's either used for bending notes - The note in brackets will be the fret number you're bending to, but in this case, I think it's a note which isn't played but is still held.

The note in brackets may be a "ghost note ". This is a note that can hardly be heard. If the tab is from a song or tune from a recording, it is probably an accidental note that has been included in the tab as a slavish reproduction of the original sound.

Tap that note. Example: E--9--7--9--7--9--10--7--(14)--9--7--(17)--
