Question: Should i get this bass guitar?

(Posted by: TiBbY pRaLl on 2010-07-28 23:52:07)

Http:/ / limaohio.craigslist.org/ msg/ 1865342980.html I'm looking into buying a bass. I'm a beginner and don't exactly expect much from a bass but good sound. Would this bass be any good?

If I were you, I wouldn't. I've only seen a few Kareras around and the ones I have seen were crap. All except one, which my friend heavily modified (new pickups, truss rod adjustments, fret filing etc.) which you could totally do with this one if you'd like. You could have a professional grade bass guitar for probably just a little less than $200. But then you would have to look up who makes the best parts, where to get them, and where to get them installed and the old ones removed which I, personally, am far too lazy to do. So, here's what I would recommend - look for something cheap made by Fender (if it says Squire, it's a lower-end but reliable beginner series made by Fender), Epiphone, Yamaha, or maybe Ibanez but they tend to be a little more expensive. Any one of these will probably run a significantly larger bill than $50 but it's much better than buying a poorly made instrument that is hard to play and will only frustrate you and make you not want to play at all. Usually you can find a new, cheaper model of any of these for around $100-$250 maybe $300. So I would suggest looking in pawn shops or small music stores for a used model which you can probably find for around $80-$150. Again, a little more than $50 but an instrument is a big investment, you want to be sure you buy something that will further your wanting to play, not diminish it. Also check the classified ads. There are a lot of misinformed people out there selling great products of all kinds for a lot cheaper than they're really worth. Who knows? You could find a really nice high-end one for really cheap and end up selling it later for big bucks if you decide not to play after all. Or, you love playing on a high quality piece of equipment so much that you stick with it and end up with a bad ass bass guitar that you only paid a fraction of its worth for. Either way, you win! And one last BIG thing whenever buying an instrument: TRY IT BEFORE YOU BUY IT!!! Always, always, ALWAYS try it first. Even if you're starting out from scratch and don't know a nut from a bridge, just slide your hand up and down the neck a few times to make sure your hand doesn't stick and your fingers move across the frets smoothly without any catching or cutting. Hold down a few notes to make sure none of them buzz and to check if they're too hard to hold for any extended amount of time. Of course, it should be a little bit hard to hold a note at first, that's normal. It will hurt to play for a while but it'll pass once your fingers build muscle and start to callus. Keep your nails trimmed so they don't scratch the fret board, remember to only hold the string down with the very tip of your finger (this is VERY important), and try not to slide one finger from note to note too much, all of your fingers are important and all of them must be used. If it looks like it would be easier to stretch a different finger over to the next note, it probably is in the long run. Good luck and have fun :) hope this helps.

Well if i were you, go meet the person .. see how it sounds, and then make your decision from there, it looks pretty good so i think it should be alright

It looks like a Fender knockoff. I've played some that aren't that bad, but you can find some REALLY bad knockoff basses. You should look at it in person and make sure that it's actually worth $50 because one of my friends got some cheap starter bass from some crappy company and the pickups sounded awful, it couldn't keep tune for more than an hour, the truss rod broke when he tried adjusting it, and the neck warped.

It would be good if you could try it out first to see if it works. Karera is not a renowned company, and sells a small line of bass or electric guitars (many just copies of famous guitar models from more reputable companies like Gibson and Fender).By looking at the design and parts, this Karera looks like a copy of a Peavey line of beginner basses (which I think would sound ok). I think, if you’re starting out and aren’t sure if you will like playing bass, then $50 isn’t a big loss. Really, all beginner basses (new and used) are quite limited in terms of the sounds you can get out of them, and the construction is somewhat cheap. I think you’re better off buying a second hand beginner one (this Karera), see if you like it, then if you do, you will have more $$$ to go towards a better bass. Hope I have helped in your decision and haven’t confused you.
