Are you talking about an acoustic electric steel string Ovation (an acoustic guitar with built in pickup)? If so, then this guitar is not designed for nylon strings. There is not enough tension in a set of nylon strings to "drive " the sound board ad the pickup properly. Furthermore, you will have a hard time fastening the nylon strings to the guitar bridge. Nylon strings are tied to the bridge while steel strings use a ball end and bridge pins. The various guitars have different type of strings designed to work with these guitars. Electric guitar uses strings with sufficient magnetic properties; acoustic steel strings are made with bronze or phosphor-bronze winding on the basses and they have a much higher tension than nylon strings. Just for the record, the basses on a nylon string set are not steel strings. They have a nylon core and are wound with thin metal. Nylon string guitars are designed and (largely) played differently than acoustic steel strings and electric guitars. The classical/ nylon string guitars have a wide and flat neck made for finger picking. The scale is longer (scale is the length of the vibrating string between the nut and the bridge saddle) and the action is higher (action is how far the strings are from the fret board). The longer scale and the higher action increases the tension in these guitars and also makes the playing feel different. You will need a nylon string guitar to play with nylon strings - or make do with your steel strings on your current guitar :-) |
